White Papers Added - Putting Physical Security Systems onto Your Corporate Network

Manufacturers: This is what your product information should support.
Conultants and Integrators: This is convergence work that you should help your clients and customers with.
End Users: Here are strategies and actions for your Security and IT departments.

Usage

These white papers are for use by Security departments and IT departments to safely and soundly put physical security systems onto their corporate network.

Description

Increasingly, as a means of reducing costs, increasing efficiencies or making better use of technology investments, organizations are integrating physical security devices for access control, monitoring and process control into the IT infrastructure. This collision of two different technology worlds, each coming from a separate management approach and protection philosophy, does not always come together easily. The differences in design, functionality, implementation, maintenance and management can present conflicts, possibly resulting in a security breach involving the IT systems, the security systems or both.

These two white papers provide guiance for Security and IT departments on how to prepare for and collaborate on putting security systens onto their corporate network.

Checklist Added - Out-of-the-Box Examination

Manufacturers: This is what you should provide to support product evaluation and deployment.
Conultants, Integrators and End Users: This is what you should demand from the manufacturer.

Usage

This checklist is for use by anyone evaluating physical security system software or hardware products, especially a product intended for use on an Ethernet network. It can also be used by manufacturers to ensure that their products pass rather than fail an out-of-the-box examination.

Description

Enterprise IT departments need to have systems and equipment that can be deployed quickly and accurately, with minimal effort, and that can be operated at low cost and low risk of trouble. IT groups have personnel who are assigned the task of evaluating candidate technology to see how they comply with these general requirements.

The evaluation step is commonly referred to as the "out-of-the-box experience" or "out-of-the-box examination." What does it take to unpack, connect and "fire up" the system or device? What kind of problems can be anticipated? What are the general characteristics of its network traffic? How accurate and complete is the documentation?

The key question is: Will the product PASS or FAIL the out-of-the-box examination?
